Introduction

Origins of Beef Day

It all started as an argument between three friends. A simple disagreement of "my favorite beef place is better than yours." So everyone piled in the car, drove to each place, ordered up an identical sandwich, and tasted the glorious beef. A day that will forever be remembered as "Beef Day Twenty Twelve". At the end of this very unscientific experiment we had proved only one thing, the North Shore roast beef sandwich is delicious.

Mission Statement:

This blog was started in the spirit of Beef Day Twenty Twelve, with a simple mission, try to find and record the best roast beef places on the North Shore. Each place I visit I will order an identical sandwich (Super, Sauce, Mayo) and record my opinion focusing on four simple categories: bun, beef, sauce, and overall. I will give my comments on each category as well as a score between 1 and 5 to summarize. When possible I will ask guest that dine with me to provide a guest review with their opinion and scores. This system is far from perfect but it's a start.

What are we looking for?:

A North Shore roast beef sandwich is not something you can find at your local deli, or at a national chain that sports a red cowboy hat. It is a unique sandwich that is made just so. First let's go over the basics:

  • Bun:  On a super beef it needs to be an onion roll, anything else will have points deducted. The bun also needs to be grilled with butter. Sesame or plain buns are acceptable and should be used only on Junior, small, or large roast beefs.
  • Beef: Soft, juicy, tender, thinly shaven roast beef is what we are looking for here. This can only be obtained if it is roasted in house and served warm. The flavor should be natural and subtle but cut through the sauce and bun.
  • Sauce: Sweet, tangy, and spicy.

There are a number of toppings that are acceptable to have, of which everyone has their own favorite combination. These I will exclude from scoring all though they may show up in the notes from time to time:
  • Mayo
  • Cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Pickle
  • Onion
So whats with the Overall score? well some parts are more intangible than "does it meet the checklist of ingredients". So with the overall score we will be looking at things like balance between flavors, overall texture, appearance and experience.
